Just For YOU: The Biggest Anti-Aging Discovery of the 21st Century Returns for an Encore Performance
[dropcap]W[/dropcap]e live in what will be looked upon years hence as the era when foundational changes in Science and Medicine made big changes in the lifespan and health span of the human race.
The trouble is most doctors and scientists have missed the boat on this one!
Ask yourself this question, “Why do most people go to doctors?”
The answer is, “To treat diseases!”
Truthfully most people don’t even contemplate going to the doctor unless there is something radically wrong or they think there might be. I know this because I was a dyed in the wool traditional Board Certified Internal Medicine Specialist for 15 years.
What did I see on a daily basis?
Sickness, Death, Depression, Anxiety and frankly not a lot of happy people who were celebrating life! Of course, there were exceptions. The most prominent among them were the folks who had managed to “outwit the aging process”!
They were surrounded by loving families, had hobbies and friends, and above all remained health for 99% of their lives.
I once asked Joe, a spry 96-year-old what his secret was. I was particularly interested in Joe because in spite of his chronologic age (birthdays counted) he seemed to act, look, and feel much younger. I would have guessed him to be no more than 70.
I will never forget how he used to kick up his heels every time he left my office. It was our little joke. He would wink and say, “Now doc, I’m going to drum up some business for you!” Then as he walked out in to the waiting are he would say, “Thanks Doc!” and jump up and click his heels together. Try that some time. It’s not so easy! And then imagine you are 96.
I was expecting some funny remark because he had a great sense of humor, followed by a sage secret that few if any knew. I expected him to say something like, “Be happy and learn to laugh at life!”
Because he certainly did.
But in answer to my question he pulled me aside in conspiratorial fashion as I bowed my head to listen.
Here is what he said.
“Doc, I lived a long time! I had 20 years more than most of my friends to learn, live and enjoy my life and make new younger friends! I had time to learn from my mistakes and fix them! Most don’t!!!
Honestly that was in the mid 1990’s and I was too young and too focused on saving man kind to internalize his wisdom.
Then, my dad died.
My Dad was my hero and for sure the main reason I become like him. If you’ve read any of my stuff over the past 15 years I’ve been public on the internet, then you know a bit about him already.
Now he died a good death.
He was playing tennis 2 weeks before he died. He suffered little and died fast and unequivocally- with no lingering rallies and false recoveries.
He was vibrant alive and active enjoying life, and then he was dead. Now of course that is the way to go if you have a choice but there was one problem.
He was only 79 years old.
I could not help but thinking there was a lot more he could give to the world and of course I was selfish and wanted him to stick around forever.
I still miss him and think of him on a daily basis. Similarly, on a nearly daily basis someone remembers him and reaches out to me to tell me how they wish he was still here.
He left an incredible legacy for those 79 years.
His death started my quest for knowledge on how we could age better and live longer and healthier lives. I decided I didn’t want to be pigeon holed into taking care of sick people while they got sicker!
I wanted to help healthy people get healthier!
It also made me realize that many doctors had missed the plot including me. People do not want to fight off diseases and depend on drugs while their life force slowly ebbs away and they watch the sweetness of life disappear like sand running through their hands.
They want health vibrant lives and the time to enjoy them. They want to see their kids and their kids’ kids grow up to be forces for good and joy in the world.
And they want time to enjoy it.
I can’t tell you how many times a patient told me. “I am going to live to be 80 and die of xyz just like my parents.”
And since the dawn of mankind this has been an inescapable truth.
But as I said above we live in a time where that paradigm is changing. We are no longer doomed to repeat the lives and life spans of our parents. Unless that is what we choose!
Genetics, epigenetics, gene therapy, immuno therapy, mitochondrial medicine are all slowly revolutionizing how we treat disease.

[av_textblock size=” font_color=” color=”]
But nothing is revolutionizing how we stay healthy!!!
That is, at least until the discoveries of Elizabeth Blackburn were recognized by the Nobel Prize Committee in 2009 when she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine for her work on telomeres, the biologic time clocks, and telomerase, the enzyme that lengthens them.
By the time Dr. Blackburn was awarded this stellar prize, many other scientists had similarly spent years working in the field.
Two men in particular made huge contributions to the field of anti-aging medicine.
One was my “Immortality Edge” co-author, Dr. Mike Fossel. Mike was the first person to stand up and say huge answers to aging, health and, longevity were in the telomeres. His book “Reversing Human Aging” was published way back in 1996.
Another gentleman who has made and continues to make huge contributions to human health is Cal Harley. In addition to several drug advances, Dr. Harley is responsible for the discovery of a compound known as TA-65- the first and most tested nutraceutical that can lengthen telomeres by turning on the enzyme telomerase.

Pronounced Teal-oh- mere or Tell-o-mere depending on where you come from is a small piece of DNA at the very end of each healthy chromosome. It is the time keeper of the cell and determines how many times that cell can reproduce to make more health copies of itself. When the telomere gets short, replication stops and that cell can no longer contribute to the health and welfare of its parent organism in normal fashion.
Telomerase (Pronounced Tell-om-er-aze) is an enzyme that is capable of lengthening the telomere giving that cell a potentially longer life and more healthy function. The problem is it is turned off or turned down to such a low level in most cells that it cannot stop the loss of the telomere. The biologic time clock keeps ticking and gets shorter in inevitable fashion as we age.

The gene for the telomerase enzyme exists in every cell that has a nucleus. In some cells like germ cells (sperm and eggs) and stem cells telomerase remains on at some level for the life of the organism. These cells are considered extremely long lived or even immortal though their hosts (you and I are not!). The expression of telomerase is the main reason why these cells can remain youthful for your entire life. Without telomerase activation the telomere segment, the biologic time clock, loses about 100 chunks called base pairs a year. When you are born you have an average of 12,000 to 15,000 of these chunks in each cell. This should tell you that the genetically possible human life span is between 120 and 150 years. Ask yourself how many people get there. The truth is, most of us only live about 2/3 of our potential health life span.

TA-65 is unique in that it is the only telomerase activation supplement that has human studies and has been shown to improve some parameters of human health.*
Dr. Harley found strong immune boosting effects for his nutraceutical TA-65 especially in people who had chronic viral infections. One can only conjecture that the compound was destined to be a drug that worked against viral infections. But fortunately for us the parent company, Geron, was in financial difficulty and elected to sell the rights to this compound as a supplement instead of a drug.
Thus, the world’s first telomerase activator was born!

There is a range of telomere length that the cell can operate in in health fashion. This length influences most aspects of the cellular repair mechanism including how solid and healthy your genes (DNA) are. Loss of the telomere segments progressively allows for more gene instability which allows for more mutations. Mutations are one of the main reasons we get cancer and other diseases of aging.
One end point of telomere loss is either loss of replication and the inability to replace sick dead and dying cells. This is called senescence. The next cellular fate is called apoptosis. This is basically “auto suicide” of the cell where the cell blows itself up. Both senescence and apoptosis cause inflammation and the loss of cells. Aging may be accelerated by these elements of cell loss since fewer and fewer healthy cells to keep you alive!

[av_textblock size=’13’ font_color=” color=”]
In 1962 a scientist at the Wistar Institute in Philadelphia, Pa. made what was then a shocking discovery. Lenard Hayflick was the first person to prove that cells did indeed have a finite life span. Up until then the scientific world believed that all cells were essentially immortal if only they were put into the proper growth media.
Dr. Hayflick discovered that his cells and all others had a specific and finite number of times they could divide and give rise to new cells. After that they basically stalled out and eventually died. In honor of this discovery the term “Hayflick Limit” was coined to explain how long organisms and people could potentially live.
For humans it is estimated at 125 years. Keep in mind that cells that have not yet reached the Hayflick limit are basically healthy and robust. This suggests that you and I could live to 125 years old with reasonably good health. Almost all of the current work in aging is about getting people to the Hayflick limit. This includes the calorie restriction mTOR crowd. It also suggests that if we were to address the limiting factor to this cellular health, we could extend life span WITH robust good health! To do that we are going to need to turn on telomerase and extend telomeres or stop their loss early enough in life.
[/av_textblock]
[/av_one_third]
[av_two_third min_height=” vertical_alignment=” space=” custom_margin=” margin=’0px’ padding=’0px’ border=” border_color=” radius=’0px’ background_color=” src=” background_position=’top left’ background_repeat=’no-repeat’ animation=” mobile_display=”]

Along with the Noble prize and the discovery of TA-65 a series of fascinating and exciting studies were done all over the world.
First and foremost, most of the studies showed that if your telomeres were short you were significantly more likely to suffer from diseases of aging such as heart disease, diabetes, infections, auto immune diseases and many more.
Still no one was sure if this was merely a sign of problems rather than a cause.
Now here is where we get into a very sticky wicket! I cannot come out and say that telomerase activation will lengthen your life. But I can say there were several studies where various and sundry forms of lengthening telomeres lengthened the life of laboratory animals beyond what is expected and in effect reversed aging in the process.
Dr. Ron DePinho was able to interrupt the aging process in rats who were deprived of telomerase by inserting a gene that could be turned on or off at will.
His animals were getting old fast until he turned the telomerase gene back on. Then they literally aged backwards with improved mental ability, skin and fur quality, immune system regeneration and of coursed they looked young again. Instead of dying prematurely they lived normal life spans with good health.
[/av_textblock]
[/av_two_third]
[av_two_third first min_height=” vertical_alignment=” space=” custom_margin=” margin=’0px’ padding=’0px’ border=” border_color=” radius=’0px’ background_color=” src=” background_position=’top left’ background_repeat=’no-repeat’ animation=” mobile_display=”]
[av_textblock size=” font_color=” color=”]
Dr. Maria Blasco did a similar experiment with normal mice that had a typical amount of telomerase naturally. When she boosted the enzyme, the mice lived up to 25% longer and had robust good health.
In human terms 25% longer would take the average current life span from about 82 to well over 100!
The scientific literature is dotted with similar studies but of course there are no specific human studies on longevity for several reasons. The biggest reason is no one knows how long you and I are going to live naturally. We are not born with “expiration dates” stamped on our foreheads!
Next, it would be nearly impossible and inhumane to try to control how people live so that all possible confounding variables could be accounted for and we could say definitively that one specific thing is what is extending our life spans. *
Finally, I think there are many agendas from huge corporations and the government that are not exactly in line with keeping people alive and healthy a lot longer!
So, what can we say about telomerase and human longevity.
It bears repeating that shortening telomeres usually accompany sickness and disease.
It bears knowing that diseases of premature aging like Progeria are a function of shorter telomeres that erode faster.
Finally, we can at least look at the studies on the parameters of human health that were done with TA-65 and see that the kinds of improvements that were seen would put a smile on your doctor’s face!!!!

[av_textblock size=’13’ font_color=” color=”]
The alphabet agencies like the FDA and FTC make very clear distinctions about “claims”. They are adamant that no claims to improve diseases are allowed for nutraceuticals including TA-65. For instance, the fact that one of the studies showed improved bone density did not go over well since there are prescription drugs for that that have undergone specific controlled trials for that disease. They do not recognize aging as a disease but that will not stop them from throwing any one in jail who claims to have a compound that addresses aging in an effective fashion. They will, at least currently, allow for the terms “combating cellular aging”.
I can only tell you my way of thinking without making any claims. First, I suggest you read the summaries and if you like the studies themselves. Next I believe that cells make up tissues, tissues make up organs, organs make up organ systems and organ systems coalesce to make up organisms like human beings! I will leave it to you to decide if combating cellular aging might have some positive improvements in aging!

We live in a first amendment country but the truth is I am extremely limited in what I can say.
I can however tell you a personal story that hits very close to home.
I had my own telomere segments tested over several years. During this time as now, I was on TA-65.

[av_textblock size=” font_color=” color=”]
This graph shows a 1000 base pair improvement in my telomeres over a 2 year time span. That is equivalent to 10 years of reversed cellular aging using the Life Length biological age calculation. Skeptics would say this calculation is artificial. But anyone would have to admit that in the history of man no one has lengthened their telomeres as they age. They always always always got shorter as age inevitably progresses.
I can guarantee you that my telomeres were shortening and faster than normal until these tests proved otherwise. The only thing I can point to that could account for that was TA-65.

Now I could regale you with other stories of telomeres that grew longer in my clients on the product but I have an even more amazing story to share with you- the story of my mother!
My mom was an amazing woman. She was very smart, sharp as a tack and, fun loving. She was beloved by all who knew her.
She hit her 80’s running and took her first motorcycle ride with me on her 80th birthday
[/av_textblock]
[/av_one_half]
[av_one_full first min_height=” vertical_alignment=” space=” custom_margin=” margin=’0px’ padding=’0px’ border=” border_color=” radius=’0px’ background_color=” src=” background_position=’top left’ background_repeat=’no-repeat’ animation=” mobile_display=”]
[av_textblock size=” font_color=” color=”]
But in her 82nd year she began to slip.
She started forgetting names, words and places and had moments of confusion and befuddlement.
Because I had no faith in the so called “Alzheimer’s Drugs” based on my own clinical experience with them, I decided to put her on high dose (4 a day) TA-65. This was not out of expectation of improvement but rather out of knowing that nothing in the prescription drugs had not worked in my practice of medicine. I also recalled some suggestion that Alzheimer’s patients had shorter telomeres in certain cells of the brain.
I discussed this with my sister Cathy and we both decided we had nothing to lose.
Much to everyone’s surprise, in about 6 weeks of 4 a day using TA-65 (and as far as we could tell nothing else changed!) my mother returned to her old self. Her memory was back, she was no longer experiencing confusion, and to my great joy, we did not have to take her driver’s license away. She did drive for 4 more years and decided to stop on her own.
She went on this way until the middle of her 86th year when the same symptoms began to reappear.
Now nothing had changed in terms of Alzheimer’s drugs. They were still worthless in my eyes despite what the drug companies and drug company sponsored journals say.
I was very disheartened!!!
You see we had shot our last bolt. The TA-65 seemed to have helped her but now she was deteriorating again.
“Now what!?” I thought. There was nothing else to try in my book.
Then it dawned on me!
One of the Number 1 causes of treatment failures is patient noncompliance!! What if my mom had decided to stop the TA-65 on her own?!
Knowing that she was one of “The Greatest Generation, you know, the ones who had lived through the Great Depression and World War !! I got ever more suspicious. These people are, sometimes rightfully, very frugal, having come from lack.
So, I asked my mom if she was still taking it. Her reply was characteristic of her own love and concern for her children, and the parsimonious nature of her generation.
She said, “No! It’s so expensive and I don’t want to burden you and your sister with the cost!” Cathy and I had been buying it for her, and of course it is expensive.
Here is where logic failed!
Any attempt to get her to let us continue unabated was based on the “Look how good you were when you took it!” argument.
You would think that you could not put a price tag on what we had achieved.
Well, it was not until we agreed to let her pay for half of it that she agreed and started taking it again.
6 weeks later she was back to her old self, sharp as a tack and full of vitality and young in her heart.
Mom eventually passed just a few weeks shy of her 90th birthday. She spent 5 days in the hospital before she died and was actually about to go home before she took a sudden turn for the worse. I was thousands of miles away and rushed home to see her one more time.
Her last words to me were, “Hello David!”, when she saw me walk in. soon after she lapsed into a coma and passed. But, none of us had to endure what so many people do with their parents-that slow inevitable slide into oblivion that accompanies loss of memory and identity that so many of our seniors go through.
My mom died knowing exactly who I was!!!
Now understand I am not telling you TA-65 cured, mitigated or treated my mom’s dementia. To suggest that a supplement might, in any way, help a disease is heresy punishable by legal action by various and sundry agencies. But I am telling you the story of my mom exactly as it happened. The honest to god’s truth is we did not change or do anything else because there was nothing else worth trying in my opinion.
Heck maybe we just got lucky or it was placebo effect. But I have never heard of placebo effect working in dementia!
Now I could also tell you about the many testimonials I got from people who said they looked younger and felt better but I know for a fact that government agencies are watching everything I do so I will stop right here and say only one thing.
Never before in history has there been a chance to lengthen telomeres. I have seen it happen and so glad I am alive in the time when there is a real chance to change the future of our lifespans and health spans.
But here is the sad part of that statement. In the 8 years since the Nobel prize was awarded for the discovery of the telomere and the enzyme telomerase that lengthens it, there has been precious little research money directed to human life span and health span. Most of it has gone into disease treatment e.g. drugs that make billions for the Pharmaceutical Industry.
As a result, if you are sitting around getting older and waiting for an approved therapy for aging you are wasting your time and your telomeres!
Don’t miss out!!!!
There is not one government sponsored or government sanctioned agency, not one medical authority in existence that thinks aging is a disease. Not one thinks that treating or curing aging will help with the so called “diseases of aging”.
In other words my friend, you and me are on our own in this battle.
We must wage our own personal war on aging because no one is going to do it for us or help us in any way.
For my money, TA-65 is a powerful weapon in that war, and one I would not be caught without.
