The word press blog has become very popular and I have a lot of regular fans and of course some regular detractors.  This is the Yin and Yang of life.

But recently I got an email accusing me of being a “Johnny Come Lately”. Now normally I shrug this stuff off but I have to admit this comment got a little bit under my skin.

The accusation was based on the “fact” that I have only been blogging since 2010 after our book “The Immortality Edge came out. You’ll notice I did not put the customary Amazon link there because Amazon has sold out of our book! You can still get it through them just not from them at the moment.

I expect and hope they’ll order more!

Anyway I thought I would remind some of you who doubt, I have been blogging a long long time on lots of different things. Here is a link to the old Blog Spot blog which spans pretty much of the past decade.

I would also inform those of you who think I am a newbie that what has to have been the very first anti-aging Podcast was recorded by us and published by the long since gobbled up “Podcast Alley” in 2005. It’s out there somewhere I just don’t know where!

That begs the question: why the gap between blogs and other forms of communication.

Frankly I was spending a lot of time and not getting a lot of feedback. It is totally different now- I still spend the time but at least I know people are reading and responding.

Here is my guess: as usual I was ahead of my time! LOL.

These forms of communication simply did not hit mainstream readership for a couple of years after I started and I guess I just figured they never would.

I was certainly wrong about that!

Thanks for your support and engagement. I think you know most of what you read here is not to be found elsewhere. You can always get a parroted back version of what some press release or article said, examples being the fish oil and prostate cancer thing and of course the recent Ornish article.

But if you want thoughtful commentary, you’ve come to the right place.

Sleep Lets Your Hormonal Body Clock Release the Needed Hormones for Repair and Rejuvenation

You have probably heard that sleep is an important component of health, anti-aging and fat loss.  So, in one fell swoop, it covers living longer, better and looking better as well. Why is it so important? Well first, sleep is one of the “big three” of the things that can make or break fat loss.

Now, if you address the big three in proper fashion: nutrition, exercise and sleep, you can control all the variables that make for successful fat loss and the new body or better body you’ve wanted for so long.

Menopause and “Menopot”

A recent study released from Mass General Hospital (a source of clinical data
for the most supplement unfriendly medical magazine next to JAMA, the New England Journal of Medicine) yielded exciting finding for women with menopausal symptoms.

Perimenopausal depression and moods swings, hot flashes and weight gain may all be combated by fish oil.  This covers the symptoms of menopause
and its attendant weight gain, known as “menopot” nicely.

This is the first time a “reputable” institution has reported such
findings and with their close ties to the gynecologic community, it
is likely that women across the country will soon be treating their
menopausal woes with fish oil.

Here’s hoping they value themselves enough to use the best — Fish
oil
and Super Omega 3.

There is another thing that was not mentioned in this study. Women in particular have gotten almost no benefit from using statin drugs to lower their cholesterol.  It turns out that triglycerides are the major risk factor for heart disease in women, not cholesterol.

Fish oil is a very beneficial way to deal with high triglycerides. No one I know who is on proper doses of my fish oil has high triglycerides any more.

Since heart disease rises rapidly after menopause in women, you might want to let anyone you know in this period of life about fish oil.

Natural Metabolic Boosters That Let You Cheat On Your Diet

Is there any one of us who doesn’t wish we could get away with “cheating” once in a while?  I have hung out with the top scientists, researchers, and
nutritionists on the planet and I can tell you even they cheat!  So how do you get away with it?

Many of them got it off the ground the same way I did. Small incremental steps. I kid you not! My current decade of exercise started with 5 minutes a day for one month. I did not allow myself more than this, because I wanted to create the tension necessary to want to do more. A lot more. I also could not convince myself that no matter how tough my day was I could not find 5 minutes to work out. In this phase of things, bodyweight was the easiest and most efficient tool.

Walking, chair squats, push-ups, pull-ups, etc can all be harnessed to perfect effect, even in short bits of time, especially if you do them with intensity.

Here is a tip: the less time you have, the more intense your workouts should be.

Next, eating right and working out really is a lifestyle that is “missed” if it’s not there. You’ll know you’ve achieved body health Nirvana when you don’t feel right missing your routines.

Third, they don’t let travel or holidays interfere all that much. Nuts are a handy travel snack. Most cities have a natural food or health store that is easily found, especially with today’s technology. A hotel room and a super band is all you need for a great workout!

They have a low tolerance for variance. What does that mean? That means that once in shape, they tolerate getting out of shape or gaining weight poorly and do something about it earlier rather than later. And believe me, these people live hectic lives full of stress and work, just like you and I.

Holiday Starvation Diets and More

Sad to say that the next 4 months will bring about considerable weight gain by millions of Americans and others as well.

Strange dichotomy, this world: half is still underfed and starving while the other half is overfed. Way overfed.

It’s estimated that in the U.S. alone 600 million pounds of excess fat will be gained and not all of it lost by the spring thaw. Check out how many pounds you need to loose to take an inch off!

So what are you going to do about it?

If you already have a lifestyle that keeps you lean and healthy, then you just do more of the same but in a nation where diabetes and obesity are the fastest growing epidemics, I doubt everyone has such a lifestyle, so let me give you a few tips.

1) Gently under eat. Just see if you can cut out 300 calories a day.  It’s easy to do and you can still have a bigger meal every now and then although it’s always hard to recover from the hormonal changes set in place by overeating.

2) Eat before you go out to your celebration meals and parties.  Here is where some raw veggies and a nice sweet apple will take the edge off of your overeating.

3) Crank up your fish oil — may as well make use of the fat burning qualities of good fats right!

4) Sleep well and focus on staying healthy.  Make your exercise routine the first thing you do on any given day and you’ll come out no worse for wear or even better at the tail end of what will be a tail spin for many.

Small Things – Big Miracles – All Fish Oil Is Not The Same

I hope you understand the power of Omega 3 fatty acids from fish oil. The problem is a lot of people do not, so I am counting on you to spread the word. There are 3 kinds of Omega 3’s.

The two your bodies can use right off the bat are EPA and DHA.

The third, ALA, comes from plant sources and is usually the one the big Food Industry is using to capitalize on the Omega 3 bandwagon.

Both DHA and EPA, which are found in fish oil, can help your heart. ALA, the type of Omega-3s found in flax seeds, soybeans and canola oil, do not prevent heart disease.

Nor does plant based ALA have any benefit for strokes, cancer, arthritis, or Alzheimer’s disease.

And here is more food for thought: ALA has been implicated as a cause of increased prostate and probably breast cancer as well.

Other sources of ALA include canola and soy, which again are often loaded into foods to make them “look” healthy. This is especially true of so called healthy spreads.

Don’t count on them to protect your health and read those labels carefully so you know where the added Omega 3’s come from.

Fish oil remains superior for all forms of prevention, treatment and overall health.

In heart studies not only did fish oil reduce heart attack but it reduced death from all causes by 45%! In that same study it was found that statin drugs did not save as many lives as fish oil and that vitamin E did not save any lives!

What Is The Best Diet To Lose Weight?

If there is one question that pops up over and over again its,”Doc, what’s the best diet to lose weight on?”

The simple answer: use a Paleo type diet with my fish oil and an exercise program as detailed in Fab Fat Loss for Everyone.

The complex answer? Well that could take days to answer and many emails so…I may as well start right now!

Today I am going to take a scientific look at two diets that are representative of two very different viewpoints.

The first diet, the diet touted by the National Cholesterol Education Program (you know, those lovely folks who think the entire nation should be on statin drugs, and think that cholesterol levels are the be all and end all of health!) stresses higher carbohydrate levels and lower fat levels.

For simplicity’s sake we’ll call this diet the NCEP diet for National Cholesterol Education Program Diet.

The Challenger we’ll call the “Modified Low Carbohydrate diet”. This diet is closer to Atkins and South Beach in that it stresses higher fat levels, higher protein levels, and lower carb levels (with the important diet?

It has been said that “Dieting is the price we pay for too little exercise and too much mass-produced food!”

Well, diets still hold the promise of better health, lower incidence of heart disease, stroke and cancer.

Right?!

Truthfully when I ask people what they are dieting for, the bottom line is many of them say “I want to look better!” first and then “I want to feel better!” Second.

Actually that holds true for a large number of folks but I know from reading your emails most of you are focused on felling better and living longer and healthier first!

Which brings me to a point: A lot of times looking better is a short term goal. People have a certain event they want to get svelte for like a marriage or a reunion, and then they forgeddaboutit!

Clearly the long term motivations work better to keep weight and inches off.

That said who wins this diet war?

Ironically an article published recently in the Archives of Internal Medicine, a rag that would be considered ultra traditional, admitted that the higher fat higher protein diet fared a lot better in both the weight loss and cholesterol lowering department.

Put another way, the “officially sanctioned” diet of the NCEP was just not as good at achieving either of the aims of the NCEP as the MLC diet.

People did not lose as much weight and there was no change in their cholesterol levels!!!

Given that these folks represent the government, the FDA, Big Pharmacy, and Traditional Medicine none of us should be too surprised.

Have any of these agencies proven even once that they know or will tell any real useful functional information about nutrition or health.

NOT ONCE!

So why should we trust them on this.

Yet this is the diet they would give you when you left the hospital with the heart attack they could have prevented!

This is the diet you would be given by a hospital or community based dietician (there are some exceptions to this but how to find them!) when you paid to see them because your insurance company does not recognize the value of preventative medicine via diet.

This is the diet so many “Health Publications” continue to print.

What do these diets say about Fish Oil?

Universally they recommend it. Even the Government is finally getting into the act when the “Dietary Recommendations for Americans” is released in early 2005.

Adkins and South Beach both recommend some form of Fish Oil.

The biggest mistake all of these bodies make is being too timid about the dosage!

You should be taking at least 3 grams a day for basic health, and 6 to 8 grams a day if you want to see moods, memory and wrinkles improve!

So don’t be timid about the health of your brain and body. Swallow those capsules with meals everyday and watch life get better and better, independent of the Government, the FDA and the rest of Traditional Medicine.

Age Reversal – “The Immortality Edge”

Wouldn’t it be great if you could literally age backwards?

Well now you can with just one little pill that cost pennies a day, and your doctor does not want you to know about because it will put him out of business.

Gotcha! See what happens when copywriting supersedes science and truth? You are given something you truly want to believe and someone feeds it to you hook, line and sinker, all for a price that seems reasonable — whatever that price may be!

OK, OK, sorry — my staff has been putting some of the nonsense that so-called experts are out there hawking. You know the same people who make all kinds of crazy claims and you are just waiting for them to try on an orange suit or move to Panama because their nonsense has finally caught up with them!

Well, here is the scoop on aging at the moment. Now I am not pulling your leg or making fun of my colleagues who hire clever copywriting teams.

You actually can age backwards at least using some measure of aging and some cell lines in your body.

Right now we tell people, “make it to over 80 and you’ll start ‘outliving’ heart disease”. This has been translated by some as the “death rate goes down after 80”.

NO, it doesn’t. The death rate from cancer and infection goes up; the death rate from cardiovascular disease goes down.

If you make it past 60 and you could beat those 3 things, you have a great chance of a very long and healthy life.

So how can you age backwards?

The only way I currently know and that has been proven to do exactly what it says it does is a very expensive supplement called TA-65. It is the kind of thing we wish we could put huge numbers of people on and get age-related data much sooner, but that is not likely to happen.

No one outside of small private companies has any interest right now in preventing aging or reducing the cancer and infection rate, at least not enough to subsidize this product and make it widely available.

How valuable is it? Well, in my own version of that gum commercial on TV — you know the one where the guy comes home with 20,000 packs of gum as payment — I worked for the company that developed it for a while and I asked them to pay me in TA-65 so I, my mom and my sister could be on it.

I believe in it that much and it is that valuable. Not surprisingly, many others do as well.

What we expect with long term data on TA-65, which has been shown to lengthen the biological time clocks in a very real sense, turn them back like daylight savings time — in this case life savings time — is there will be less cancer and less infection as we age. We also know that telomeres are intimately involved in heart disease as well. The early data suggests great that telomeres are intimately involved in heart disease as well. The early data suggests great findings in bone density, immune function, blood pressure, blood sugar and inflammatory markers to name a few.

All good and all scientifically validated.

But what can the person do who cannot afford the supplement (it ranges between $2,200 and $8,000 a year)?

The answer is simple: Green tea, multi-vites and fish oil.

All have been shown to SLOW DOWN the rate at which the time clocks tick and get shorter. This translates into longer life among the people that were studied. It also translates into better health, making this combination of multi-vites, green tea and fish oil a very real contender for the best of the anti-aging “drugs” out there that are affordable to just about everyone who really cares about their life, the lives of their loved ones and their health as well.

When Copywriting Wins, Science Loses

A recent and popular study is spreading like wild fire across the internet claiming “Fish oil is no good for Alzheimer’s”.

While the researchers involved in the Alzheimer’s dementia study state it is reasonable to test only DHA because DHA alone has shown positive benefits in other studies (such as for stroke, ADHD, depression, etc.)  those of us who are fatty acid experts feel that the data on fish oil (using both EPA and DHA ) is much stronger because EPA is present in the brain as well; it is just metabolized very quickly into DHA or oxidized (as a free radical sink) so it is not present in the highly measurable amounts that DHA, which is a structural form, is in brain cell membranes.

It is therefore incorrect to say “Fish oil no good for Alzheimer’s” as so many web sites have reported because DHA is not fish oil, it is one half of it!!!  Review of studies on Pub Med shows a very strong correlation to using fish oil and reduction in plaques as well as functional changes in patients.

Using DHA alone and getting negative results for Alzheimer’s is not new.  There are probably at least 6 other studies done before this one that showed the same thing over the past 5 years.  These people were just smart enough to send out a press release and get publicity!

Sadly, there continues to be an “anti-fish oil” campaign by the Pharmaceutical Industry that is losing tons of money to alternative medicine because of their own constant blunders and dangerous drugs.  They have nothing useful to offer Alzheimer’s patients; just ask the caregivers who have to watch them decline with or without medicines.

Worse, people who are not aware of fatty acid biology are playing right into their hands.  A similar study by a drug company sponsored Journal got translated on the internet as “fish oil no good for heart disease”.  In that study low dose fish oil was added to margarine (already loaded with trans fats!) and given to people for a short period of time.  Those people had been on maximal drug therapy for years and had the diagnosis of heart disease for an average of 10 years.

The headlines should have read “Low dose fish oil in high trans fat
margarine does not improve outcomes in older patients with long term heart disease on maximal therapy at the time fish oil was started.”

Instead it got translated on the web as “Fish Oil no good for heart disease” and spread like wildfire with that headline.

Here is another one: ‘fish oil related to colon cancer’.  In this study fish oil was given to cancer prone mice and the mice got “more cancer” than before.  This is also a rehash of a series of other old studies that showed the same thing but whose authors did not use press releases or the internet to garner publicity.  Human studies show the exact opposite. In human colon cancer lines fish oil causes the death of the cancer cells and reduces the metastatic behavior.  Population based studies in humans on higher Omega 3 levels show the same things.  Fish oil also reduces most forms of Inflammatory Bowel disease including ulcerative colitis, a higher Omega 3 levels show the same things.  Fish oil also reduces most forms of Inflammatory Bowel disease including ulcerative colitis, a precursor to colon cancer.

In most cases the misrepresentation is due to one of three things:
1) ignorance, 2) laziness, 3) deliberate hyperbole by copywriters.
None of it is helpful to the reader!

My advice: take enough fish oil to get to the Paleolithic level 0.8
Omega 6 to Omega 3, which for most Americans would be 6 grams a day.

The internet is a mixed blessing.  Everyone can claim expertise and lots of stuff just gets spread out of control with no one looking at it critically.

Don’t forget your Fish oil and Super Omega 3.

Can You Prevent Diabetes and Heart Disease?

One of the things that make me different from some other internet doctors is that I will not lie to you. Now I will admit there are some pretty far out characters out there with “MD” behind their name but I have yet to meet one that doesn’t know the truth from the lies.

The same cannot be said of their copyrighting teams, which is why when you read my newsletters you are actually reading something written by me.

In addition, if you ever meet me in person there will be no inconsistency with who I am, what I am and what I write. I always have to laugh when people meet their heroes for the first time and they are nothing like what they thought!

Odds are they are they are not the people who actually write what you read!

So I am not going to lie to you and tell you in a headline that you can prevent diabetes and then spend the rest of the newsletter qualifying what I said.

Here is the truth: a small amount of type 2 diabetes and a larger amount of type 1 diabetes is not preventable.

Most people who are type 1 become so relatively early in life. I have also seen a disconcerting trend in what I call clusters of adult onset type 1 (insulin dependent) diabetes that seems to happen in the same geographic area or at the same time of the year related to virus spread.

We are probably looking in the wrong direction for type 1 diabetes. We probably need to address auto-immunity and inflammation. I think that fish oil could be a huge help here IF you are on it when your immune system and pancreas are challenged, not afterward as much.

The majority of our population is now type 2 diabetes. Once called “adult onset” we had to rename it because between sugar loading our food, inflammatory artificial fats and sedentary lifestyles, we’ve now managed to give it to little children, adolescents and teens too!

Congratulations to Big Pharma, Big Food, Big Media for the endless distractions that sit us on our butts and to yes, you and I for not following our gut and doing the two things that would prevent it and teaching our children and loved ones these words: eat less, move more!

Ok off the soapbox. Here is how you prevent type 2 diabetes…

*Eat less
*Move more
*Go on a Paleolithic or near Paleolithic diet
*Adopt a regular exercise program
*Take fish oil! And Balance your sugar levels.

 

Now because most people will not do all those things and more people will take a pill than eating less or moving more, I am happy to tell you that fish oil is a great thing whether you have diabetes or not.

It improves insulin sensitivity.

It improves fat burning and lean body mass.

It decreases inflammation and this is important because we used to say you eat too much sugar and you burn out your pancreas and then you get diabetes. I am sure this explanation is still being given to people across the country in doctors’ offices.

What really happens is the inflammation in our body skyrockets because of excess sugar and excess insulin and we INFLAME our pancreases to the point of burn out.

So once again the anti-inflammatory actions of fish oil are critical.

So odds are that you and I can prevent diabetes. And this reduces our odds of heart disease 6 fold.

The only real question is do you love your body and yourself and your loved ones enough to take the best, cleanest and most potent fish oil out there instead of some off shore cheap contaminated brand sold in bulk by large retailers.
