I had a rather hilarious conversation about developing skill sets that come in useful throughout life.
In my estimation a couple of things need to be present when you are becoming an expert at something.
  1. You need to be passionate about it. It’s rare that everything you tackle is simple and easy. It’s rare that you find something you are immediately a “natural” at. That means you are bound to experience gaps in your leaps and bounds of progress. That will challenge you and you’ll need the Power of Passion.
  2. Focus! It’s so easy for the outside world to intrude on your wants desires and the way you spend your time. Inevitably your focus will be challenged, often without you realizing it.
  3. Making enough time for mastery. This could fall under 1 and 2 but because we are so time stressed I think it deserves its own category. You don’t really know how long its going to take but generally it takes longer than you think. Most people don’t even get past the concept of wanting to do something new or different before they say to themselves “ I don’t have time for that!” While its true that you cannot make time out of nothing you can prioritize and decide where you want to spend it. Only you can make that decision but once you make it stick to it!!!!
  4. Understanding and support. If you can find an expert to spoon feed you all the better. People tend to be happy that someone else loves something as much as they do- that is of course until you get better at it than they do!!! Your support system needs to be reliable or at least not disruptive. It’s hard to do anything if people you care about don’t support you. Get that right and you have an immense advantage!!!
  5. What’s actually valuable. In the title I list 2 skill sets that I have developed. I am great at home made ice cream and hell on wheels at treating patients with Botox though I rarely do it any more. The first one is truly not valuable, the second one was – at least once. But I don’t regret either of them!!! They were both things I am/was passionate about and in some way brought joy to a lot of people.
  6. Have a secret weapon!!! Mine is called Brain Force 1 . It has helped me in almost magical fashion to master all kinds of dissimilar skill sets that make up who I am.
