The Best Medicine
I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase “Humor is the Best Medicine” before.
Ironically, its not far from the truth.
Over the past couple days I have indeed had some humorous reflections that have tempered some of the stings, slings and arrows of everyday life.
Several reconnections with old friends sharing stores from long ago are often great sources of humor.
Perhaps the most bittersweet was one shared with another Dr Dave W about how we slaved to get into med school.
This Dr Dave W was more willing to tolerate the changes in the profession than I was sticking it out until a few months ago. On a long walk through the forest (10,000 steps+) we almost doubled over when I said, “Can you believe we actually believed we were going to change the world!’
Of course, the truth is our intentions were noble even if the infrastructure of our system changes so much as to make both of us feel like naïve little children at the end of our careers! In point of fact in perhaps a smaller less dramatic way than we had hoped both of us did indeed change the world.
Frankly, I haven’t given up yet.
The other day while teaching a Yoga class to my few students I watched 2 of them achieve something magical. They are 67 and 69 years old respectively and have been doing Yoga for 2 years which is not a long time at all.
Each of them was able to get into 2 different hand balances: Crow and Eka P B (eka pada koundinyasana B). Both require different types of strength, body control and connectivity and conquering fear of falling! One is “vertical” the other horizontal.
Especially remarkable was the 69 year old female who has with specific tutelage developed the upper body and core strength needed to get into and hold these poses. Her husband, slightly younger did the same as a result of working with me specifically on his flexibility since he had the needed strength.
Each needed very different specifics in their training and happily responded to my suggestion to let me train them separately the majority of the time.
Now I must tell you this was a joyous moment for all of us to the point where I tried and did a wide legged head stand-another first.
The humorous part of all this came when we reflected where we all were 2 years ago when we started this journey. Some of the most basic poses were barely reachable! I am sure in another few months we will be laughing at where we are now with good humor and joy. Its such fun to progress.
I would be remiss if I didn’t tell you the secret ingredient that we all use a big dose of every day.
The potent pure Omega 3 (EPA/DHA)lubricates our joints and reduces inflammation so we can go at it harder and sooner than people half our age. This has been a huge factor in all our practices.
That is of course only the tip of the iceberg for Fish Oil benefits but mobility is one of the key missing links to remaining young. If you ask me, we are all functionally younger than we were 2 years ago.
If you can’t say that in good conscience, you might want to place an order now! Its true we are back ordered and out of stock but only for another week or two and then the flood gates open and it starts flying off the shelves again.*
It’s so important for your health!
Don’t wait for it to be stocked out again!
With the hope for your continued health and wellness (and achieving cool things you love!) and have plenty to laugh and smile about!
Dr Dave
*To those of you who are patiently waiting for your back orders- you will be served first as soon as it is off the delivery truck. I thank you for your patience and loyalty- without it I would have packed it in a LONG TIME ago!
