The problem with freedom of speech

We have an election coming up and I am all for freedom, but in response to an article sent to me for evaluation on a widely read internet site, I wrote the piece below. The central theme of the article was, just because there were two well-publicized “fish oil no good for your heart” reports this year, fish is still good for you, because it’s food not a supplement.

I wish people who write about health matters on the internet would learn to read studies and do a tiny, tiny little bit of research on the internet itself, before writing misinformation. After thousands of studies have shown that fish oil supplements are at least as beneficial as eating fish and do not contain mercury, you once again advance the ridiculous concept that there is something magical in fish that is not found in fish oil. The active ingredient is, was and always will be Omega 3 fatty acids, in both fish and fish oil, when it comes to disease prevention.

Next, instead of placing all the weight on one or two studies, it would make more sense to look at the big picture and comment on that. There are thousands of positive studies on fish oil. This one was NOT A STUDY. It was a meta analysis, a tool used to generate quick inexpensive publications that are totally dependent on data input. The data used in this one went back to 1987, long before any of the highly purified ethyl ester fish oils were available and no attempts were made to assure its validity, other than “looking at the study”. Next, there was no attempt to control, for some of the most important confounding variables, like the increasing use of cardiovascular meds. Next, no attempt was made at measuring the Omega 6/3 ratios, to establish effective treatment levels – the usual dose was “one a day”. These last two comments also apply to the Origin-Grace study, which was NOT a fish oil study by design. It was used to study Glargine (lantus) insulin efficacy in diabetics and was funded by Sanofi, the makers of said insulin. The fish oil group was a sub group analysis. The results of fish oil’s “failure” (actually, it was reported as having no effect) were released as giant headlines, weeks before a tiny headline, noting the failure of Lantus to prevent progression of heart disease. In this study, over 50% of the participants were also on statins, aspirin and other anti-diabetic drugs. No attempt was made to look at the role these drugs might have played in the progression of heart disease or the interference with insulin or fish oil. The rash of the “Fish oil no good for your heart” clearly defrayed the public and physician (!) attention away from the failure of Lantus insulin.

This Emax piece, sent to me, is just another in a long line of “articles” that simply make conclusions based on parroting back misinformation. I know it takes a little time to actually read a study, learn about what it really says and you might miss the window of public interest on the internet (God forbid), but you might actually have something valuable to add to reality.

This is the similar logic that goes on when people write that telomerase causes cancer. Several years ago, one of the Nobel Laureates raised the theoretical concern and now it is gospel truth, with no one bothering to look at all the research and growth in knowledge that answers that concern definitively.

This individual has used his “professorship” status to garner the term “doctor” and make statements about your health, particularly regarding dangerous effects of Omega 3’s. Classic example.

This is the problem with the internet. There is no mechanism to check the validity of who and what is being said, other than the reader doing a little extra research. If it is advertised well enough, it becomes “truth” until someone finds out the real truth and disabuses people of their misconceptions. Sadly, this process takes an extra 30 seconds and no one does it. It would take another 30 seconds, to actually read the study, instead of just reflexively responding to the headline. That tallies up to be about 1 minute no one can spare.

I guess it is only going to get worse. I had a “discussion” with my friend’s 12 year old daughter a month or so ago, about why no one uses email any more. “It’s too slow!!” she said, emphatically. So, we had a race – her text vs. my email. She won, beating me by 17 seconds. I had to ask myself what is so friggin’ important, in the life of a 12 year old, that 17 seconds has become too long to wait. And here I am expecting adults to do a minute’s worth of work.

Freedom of speech was designed to protect the rights of individuals, to express different and dissenting opinions. The key word is “opinion”. Spreading scientific misinformation about factual events has another name. It’s called BS. Of course if there were a law to protect us from that, we would have no internet and probably no government either!

You have probably heard that sleep is an important component of health, anti-aging and fat loss.  So, in one fell swoop, it covers living longer, better and looking better as well. Why is it so important? Well first, sleep is one of the “big three” of the things that can make or break fat loss.

Now, if you address the big three in proper fashion: nutrition, exercise and sleep, you can control all the variables that make for successful fat loss and the new body or better body you’ve wanted for so long.

Life in the Balance – Balance is the Key to Life

It’s staring us in the face like a big diamond in our very own back yard… A simple, easy thing everyone can do to tip the scales of life in their favor.  So easy, so simple, yet so neglected.

We have it all wrong today with medicine. I say, as a board certified doc with over 20 years of patient experience and thousands of lives improved and not many fewer, actually saved. But, for many of those years, I had it all wrong. Putting your finger in the dike that has sprung so many leaks and not doing something about what is poking holes in the dike, is “bass ackwards thinking” and yet it is at the root of most of what we doctors do today.

If there was one thing I could do for this country and many others, it would be to rebalance the Omega 3 to Omega 6 ratios of our people to closer to 1 to 1.

I am convinced this would reduce heart disease and cancer by 50%

Same for dementias of all kinds, by the same and arthritis and many of the other debilitating diseases we face as we age so unhealthily, in this country, in similar fashion. Throw in a little Vitamin D, some antioxidants and my famous 4 words:” move more, eat less” and you would see a totally different picture of heath in this country.

And it would not be just physical health. It would be mental, behavioral and spiritual heath as well.

Life would be worth living and pursuing, well past the current limit of 80-ish.

The simplest and fastest way to do that

Is to take your fish oil and if you can swallow just a few more pills, upgrade to the Daily Dose Pack. Menopause and “Menopot”

A recent study released from Mass General Hospital (a source of clinical data
for the most supplement unfriendly medical magazine next to JAMA, the New England Journal of Medicine) yielded exciting finding for women with menopausal symptoms.

Perimenopausal depression and moods swings, hot flashes and weight gain may all be combated by fish oil.  This covers the symptoms of menopause
and its attendant weight gain, known as “menopot” nicely.

This is the first time a “reputable” institution has reported such
findings and with their close ties to the gynecologic community, it
is likely that women across the country will soon be treating their
menopausal woes with fish oil.

Here’s hoping they value themselves enough to use the best — Fish
oil
and Super Omega 3.

There is another thing that was not mentioned in this study. Women in particular have gotten almost no benefit from using statin drugs to lower their cholesterol.  It turns out that triglycerides are the major risk factor for heart disease in women, not cholesterol.

Fish oil is a very beneficial way to deal with high triglycerides. No one I know who is on proper doses of my fish oil has high triglycerides any more.

Since heart disease rises rapidly after menopause in women, you might want to let anyone you know in this period of life about fish oil.

Natural Metabolic Boosters That Let You Cheat On Your Diet

Is there any one of us who doesn’t wish we could get away with “cheating” once in a while?  I have hung out with the top scientists, researchers, and
nutritionists on the planet and I can tell you even they cheat!  So how do you get away with it?

Many of them got it off the ground the same way I did. Small incremental steps. I kid you not! My current decade of exercise started with 5 minutes a day for one month. I did not allow myself more than this, because I wanted to create the tension necessary to want to do more. A lot more. I also could not convince myself that no matter how tough my day was I could not find 5 minutes to work out. In this phase of things, bodyweight was the easiest and most efficient tool.

Walking, chair squats, push-ups, pull-ups, etc can all be harnessed to perfect effect, even in short bits of time, especially if you do them with intensity.

Here is a tip: the less time you have, the more intense your workouts should be.

Next, eating right and working out really is a lifestyle that is “missed” if it’s not there. You’ll know you’ve achieved body health Nirvana when you don’t feel right missing your routines.

Third, they don’t let travel or holidays interfere all that much. Nuts are a handy travel snack. Most cities have a natural food or health store that is easily found, especially with today’s technology. A hotel room and a super band is all you need for a great workout!

They have a low tolerance for variance. What does that mean? That means that once in shape, they tolerate getting out of shape or gaining weight poorly and do something about it earlier rather than later. And believe me, these people live hectic lives full of stress and work, just like you and I.

Recently I was interviewed on TV about things we could all do that were simple and inexpensive to improve our health and stay young.  You may be as surprised as the TV host was at what I suggested!

Holiday Starvation Diets and More

Sad to say that the next 4 months will bring about considerable weight gain by millions of Americans and others as well.

Strange dichotomy, this world: half is still underfed and starving while the other half is overfed. Way overfed.

So what are you going to do about it?

If you already have a lifestyle that keeps you lean and healthy, then you just do more of the same but in a nation where diabetes and obesity are the fastest growing epidemics, I doubt everyone has such a lifestyle, so let me give you a few tips.

1) Gently under eat. Just see if you can cut out 300 calories a day.  It’s easy to do and you can still have a bigger meal every now and then although it’s always hard to recover from the hormonal changes set in place by overeating.

2) Eat before you go out to your celebration meals and parties.  Here is where some raw veggies and a nice sweet apple will take the edge off of your overeating.

3) Crank up your fish oil — may as well make use of the fat burning qualities of good fats right!

4) Sleep well and focus on staying healthy.  Make your exercise routine the first thing you do on any given day and you’ll come out no worse for wear or even better at the tail end of what will be a tail spin for many.

How To Live Long And Healthy Well Past Age 55

The Next Secret Ingredient

As with most of my products those of you who have been taking Super Omega 3 for a long time have been getting something that has been a secret to the rest of the supplement world.

In fact you’ve been getting it for the past 7+ years and believe me it’s a good thing.

That ingredient is a super form of Vitamin E known as tocotrienols and I chose it for Super Omega 3 because in order to call it “super” I had to do a lot of hard work to make it more potent than my already amazing fish oil.

Here are some of the data on tocotrienols. Look it over and you’ll see that when combined with the world’s best fish oil, turmeric and other natural anti-inflammatory oils and you see why Super Omega 3 is a stand alone “no one comes close” product.

The first thing that makes tocotrienols different from tocopherols (traditional vitamin E forms) is tocotrienols have the ability to move about and across cell membranes. This allows them to offer even more antioxidant protection than Vitamin E.

Several studies have been done linking tocotrienols to cholesterol reduction and heart disease and arteriosclerosis (clogged arteries) in lab subjects.

A study in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry suggested a clear role for tocotrienols in breast and prostate cancer and a potential role in others with studies pending.

Recently, Malaysian researchers reported the benefits of vitamin E tocotrienols to boost the immune response and immune function in healthy women following a vaccination. The study was published in the European Journal of Nutrition.

Other studies have shown neuroprotective effects, DNA protective effects and finally even an improvement in male pattern baldness.

As usual, more studies are needed and no claims can be made by me, other than what I have seen with my own eyes in non-controlled fashion. The most striking thing and the one I measured most was cholesterol improvements. Again, I can’t tell you to throw away your drugs, but given the long term benefits of the combination of fish oil, turmeric and tocotrienols you might want to add Super Omega 3 to your daily routine or to even consider replacing my standard fish oil if you need more power.
