Holiday Starvation Diets and More

Sad to say that the next 4 months will bring about considerable weight gain by millions of Americans and others as well.

Strange dichotomy, this world: half is still underfed and starving while the other half is overfed. Way overfed.

It’s estimated that in the U.S. alone 600 million pounds of excess fat will be gained and not all of it lost by the spring thaw. Check out how many pounds you need to loose to take an inch off!

So what are you going to do about it?

If you already have a lifestyle that keeps you lean and healthy, then you just do more of the same but in a nation where diabetes and obesity are the fastest growing epidemics, I doubt everyone has such a lifestyle, so let me give you a few tips.

1) Gently under eat. Just see if you can cut out 300 calories a day.  It’s easy to do and you can still have a bigger meal every now and then although it’s always hard to recover from the hormonal changes set in place by overeating.

2) Eat before you go out to your celebration meals and parties.  Here is where some raw veggies and a nice sweet apple will take the edge off of your overeating.

3) Crank up your fish oil — may as well make use of the fat burning qualities of good fats right!

4) Sleep well and focus on staying healthy.  Make your exercise routine the first thing you do on any given day and you’ll come out no worse for wear or even better at the tail end of what will be a tail spin for many.

And come the spring thaw you’ll be ready for the beach. See you there!

Body By, Well Not Exactly by Santa!

The other day I saw one of those counter culture tee shirts which I have to admit was pretty funny.  It said, “Body by Santa Claus”. While this is humorous it did make me think, Ol’ St Nick is not exactly my physical role model.

This year more than ever (perhaps it’s because we have more readers than ever) people are voicing their needs to try to fight off the winter weight gain that seems to be such a part of our society.

I am here to help with that, so let’s dive into a recent email.

What Is The Best Diet To Lose Weight?

If there is one question that pops up over and over again its,”Doc, what’s the best diet to lose weight on?”

The simple answer: use a Paleo type diet with my fish oil and an exercise program as detailed in Fab Fat Loss for Everyone.

The complex answer? Well that could take days to answer and many emails so…I may as well start right now!

Today I am going to take a scientific look at two diets that are representative of two very different viewpoints.

The first diet, the diet touted by the National Cholesterol Education Program (you know, those lovely folks who think the entire nation should be on statin drugs, and think that cholesterol levels are the be all and end all of health!) stresses higher carbohydrate levels and lower fat levels.

For simplicity’s sake we’ll call this diet the NCEP diet for National Cholesterol Education Program Diet.

The Challenger we’ll call the “Modified Low Carbohydrate diet”. This diet is closer to Atkins and South Beach in that it stresses higher fat levels, higher protein levels, and lower carb levels (with the important diet?

It has been said that “Dieting is the price we pay for too little exercise and too much mass-produced food!”

Well, diets still hold the promise of better health, lower incidence of heart disease, stroke and cancer.

Right?!

Truthfully when I ask people what they are dieting for, the bottom line is many of them say “I want to look better!” first and then “I want to feel better!” Second.

Actually that holds true for a large number of folks but I know from reading your emails most of you are focused on felling better and living longer and healthier first!

Which brings me to a point: A lot of times looking better is a short term goal. People have a certain event they want to get svelte for like a marriage or a reunion, and then they forgeddaboutit!

Clearly the long term motivations work better to keep weight and inches off.

That said who wins this diet war?

Ironically an article published recently in the Archives of Internal Medicine, a rag that would be considered ultra traditional, admitted that the higher fat higher protein diet fared a lot better in both the weight loss and cholesterol lowering department.

Put another way, the “officially sanctioned” diet of the NCEP was just not as good at achieving either of the aims of the NCEP as the MLC diet.

People did not lose as much weight and there was no change in their cholesterol levels!!!

Given that these folks represent the government, the FDA, Big Pharmacy, and Traditional Medicine none of us should be too surprised.

Have any of these agencies proven even once that they know or will tell any real useful functional information about nutrition or health.

NOT ONCE!

So why should we trust them on this.

Yet this is the diet they would give you when you left the hospital with the heart attack they could have prevented!

This is the diet you would be given by a hospital or community based dietician (there are some exceptions to this but how to find them!) when you paid to see them because your insurance company does not recognize the value of preventative medicine via diet.

This is the diet so many “Health Publications” continue to print.

What do these diets say about Fish Oil?

Universally they recommend it. Even the Government is finally getting into the act when the “Dietary Recommendations for Americans” is released in early 2005.

Adkins and South Beach both recommend some form of Fish Oil.

The biggest mistake all of these bodies make is being too timid about the dosage!

You should be taking at least 3 grams a day for basic health, and 6 to 8 grams a day if you want to see moods, memory and wrinkles improve!

So don’t be timid about the health of your brain and body. Swallow those capsules with meals everyday and watch life get better and better, independent of the Government, the FDA and the rest of Traditional Medicine.

Sleep Your Way Thin – Wouldn’t It Be Great If You Could Lose Fat And Weight While You Sleep?


Did you know you are in the fat burning zone when you sleep. As a matter of fact, fat is probably the only source of fuel for you while you sleep but it’s nowhere near enough for you to impact on your fat stores if you are overweight or are not sleeping enough.

Well, I am here to tell you the sad news; you can’t really lose much of anything while you sleep. I will let some other copywriting team that works for an internet doctor lie to you on that one, but I won’t.

I will tell you this: if you aren’t sleeping around 7 hours or more regularly, you are going to have a really hard time losing any weight permanently.

Research study after research study has shown the same thing over and over again: sleep deprivation hinders weight and fat loss and promotes fat gain.

It does so by the following mechanisms:

  • Tired people don’t work out.
  • Tired people get more tired because their metabolism slows down and prevents fat loss.
  • Tired people do not have enough serotonin so they are apt to eat more sugary starchy “comfort” foods.

The bad news is most of America sleeps far less than 7 hours a night. More bad news: you heard of the Paleolithic Diet from me on several occasions. Well, genetically our Paleolithic makeup is to be athletic and sleep 8 to 9 hours a night. In other words, we are best when we are jocks and jockettes who sleep a lot because that is what we had to do to survive 50,000 years ago when our current genetic foundation was set in stone!

So here are a few suggestions.

Fat loss – Converting Inches To Pounds

How many pounds do you have to lose to drop an inch off your waist? Well sadly there is no scientific study for me to quote and people of course lose weight differently all, of which we’ll cover in a moment, but I can and will give you a ball park figure.

Your first inch will most likely be noticeable by 8 pounds, your second inch will take another 17 to 18.

Why the difference? The first inch is primarily water weight which your body will shed first, especially if you reduce the carbs in your diet. Carbs stored in the muscle as glycogen require a certain amount of water to be present and this water goes first as you reduce your calories because your increased fat burning will take longer. Your body defends fat as a long term energy storage source more tenaciously than it does your carb storage sources.

The amount of weight you need to lose per inch stays about the same thereafter — in the 17-18 pound range. When I dropped 50 pounds of body weight (over 75% of it body fat) a few years back using the principles in Fabulous Fat Burning for Everyone (and featuring my Ultra Strength Fat Furnace) I lost about 4 inches from my waist and at least as much from my derriere!

The fun part was putting on jeans I had since college!

Now here are a few other things to remember.

Eat less but not too much less. Too few calories and you’ll stall out.

Mind your nutrition. Keep your food choices wide but avoid carbs as much as you can. Whey protein has a great anabolic effect as well and is a great way to reduce dessert and snack intake and when you are hungry.

Do As I Say Not As I Do or Better Yet Do As I Did – Formerly Fat Doctors Don’t Lie

Have you ever heard that one?

Chances are if you did it was years ago from a parent or other authority figure.

But some people are still treating you like a kid and using this mentality to justify their own flaws.

Who am I talking about?

I am talking about doctors, my friend.

As a whole, doctors are some of the unhealthiest, most self-neglecting, poor examples of what you should do.

We all took the Hippocratic Oath, now some of us (many of us) need to take the Hypocritic Oath and stop being hypocrites.

What triggered this outlash by yours truly?

Well this has been a big week for doctors.

I happened to be visiting the hospital briefly (not a as patient!) and I ran into a guy who I remembered was in the Family Practice residency.

He was at least 50 pounds overweight then. Now as a practicing doc he is probably 100 pounds overweight.

Who is he kidding? What would be the absolute very first thing you would think if a doctor like that told you to lose weight?

Probably something like “Look in the mirror, pal”.

Funny thing about us doctors — we think (and in some cases its true) that just by telling people to do things they will do it.

But imagine how much more impact it would have if we as physicians actually practiced what we preached.

I do and I see no reason why most docs, male or female, cannot.

I am not brighter or genetically more gifted metabolically than any of them.

Just yesterday I was finishing a run with a good friend of mine who is an ER doc at a local hospital. He’s training for his first Marathon and wanted someone who has been there and done that to train with.

Now I rarely go long any more so we kept it to 6 miles.

The last 1.5 miles we steadily increased the pace for quarter mile increments until we hit the last quarter mile at about 85% max speed.

That is how you get faster, not just running longer a little faster.

Anyway, on the way out we passed two former residents of mine.

Each of them is at least 10 years younger than me.

One jokingly said “Hey, pick it up, Doc”.

That is what they all say.

My friend and I wound up catching and passing them at the very end.

They had walked about 2 miles in the time we had run 6.

Afterward in the parking lot they came over and we started to chat.

Here I was with two of my former residents from years back.

It was great to see them and fun to talk to them.

But I could not help but notice neither of them was anywhere near ideal body weight.

As a matter of fact, they were both fat and out of shape.

One was a kidney doc the other a heart doc.

I thought to myself, “How big and bad is this weight loss thing that two of my brightest former pupils have been caught by it? I wonder what their patients think when they say, ‘You have to lose weight!’”

Then it came: the “how did you do it” question.

Both of them were nothing short of desperate to lose weight and just about as clueless as the next person.

A heart doc and a kidney doc; desperate, emotionally overwrought and beaten by the fat demon.

The Number One Killer is Going to Change Very Soon


Right now heart disease is far and away the number one killer of Americans and many others. But all that is going to change possibly within the next 7 to 10 years. So if you are planning on sticking around that long you need to start paying attention to your immune system.

While some nasty mutant form of the flu is always looming on the horizon, your immune system also plays a role in fighting off other even more common diseases and of course cancer.

It is predicted that by 2020 cancer and infection will be on parity with heart disease as far as killing us off. We will also be living longer, much longer if I have anything to say about it…

I hope you are also using a good dose of my fish oil because in addition to saving women from breast cancer, Omega 3’s have scored big with men and prostate cancer. It turns out that high fish consumption led to a decrease in metastatic disease and death rate.

These findings add some of the preexisting fish oil studies on both of these forms of cancer and the great benefits of fish oil in reducing the risk and reducing the severity of the disease if you get it.

Now the most recent research out of McGill University in the beautiful city of Montreal used fish, not oil, but most scientists now concede that there is no other active ingredient in fish besides Omega 3 (EPA and DHA). In addition when fish are used there are several problems

1) Pollution and its negative effect on the Omega 3’s as seen in the Finnish Heart studies where mercury from fish negated the benefits of the oil.

2) No one knows what fish you should eat because the oil content varies greatly.

3) Not everyone likes oily fish and the non oily kinds are of little or no help.

You Get What You Pay For

Pretty much the whole world understands how important taking Omega 3 fish oil is by now. Every single day a new study comes out on a new problem that is solved or an old illness that is improved by fish oil.

There are even occasional studies published with the intent to discredit the findings, mainly by people trying to save Big Pharma’s “share” of the health care future or ones who are trying to get attention by publishing something negative.

It’s that way for anything that becomes useful until it becomes second nature to everyone and no more questions are asked.

But one question that should always be asked is where the product comes from. The recent purity failures of 13 major fish oil distributors concerning California’s Proposition 65 unearthed a whole new set of questions including the source.

My raw product comes from Norway and Iceland and is processed here in the U.S. First in California, home to Prop 65 so you know it must meet or exceed those standards, and then the final testing and processing occurs in Utah, so its U.S. made.

At this point at least 20% of the fish oil consumed in the U.S. comes from China, which is where it is suspected fish oil that failed purity tests earlier this year originated, leading to so many companies missing the boat on purity and processing. Odds are it all came from the same place, which is why it all failed in the same areas.

Sadly and currently, Chinese importers continue to have problems with toxins, contaminants, heavy metals and even pharmaceutical contamination.

In 2008 a contaminated ingredient from China showed up in heparin, a blood-thinning medicine that was linked to 149 deaths. The previous year, dogs and cats died after eating pet food made with wheat gluten from China that apparently contained melamine, a toxic substance.

No one is inspecting Chinese fish oil factories and no one is publishing data on these products until they become toxic. Not one of the Chinese fish oil plants is a member of any of the global quality organizations either and you cannot force anyone there to open up their doors for inspection.

The Chinese export 4 billion fish oil capsules a year.

Guess where most of it goes.

Wanna ask retail giants that sell fish oil at $5 a bottle (such as Wal-Mart and Costco) where their products come from?

Michael Douglas Cancer Treatment

I sincerely hope someone has told Mr. Douglas about the use of Omega 3 fish oil for his cancer.

The famous actor is suffering from Stage 4 cancer of the base of the tongue, often associated with the HPV virus (human papillomavirus).

Studies have shown multiple roles of fish oil in this and other kinds of cancer including prostate, breast, and colon (yes, numerous colon cancer studies reveal the benefits of fish oil!).

It works at multiple levels:

1) The higher the amount of Omega 3’s in the blood stream the lower the risk of cancer, according to studies as far back as 2003 and repeated several times since then. This is why I am constantly peeved at the attempts of drug company sponsored journals to publish articles that claim that adding more fish oil is of no benefit for heart disease. I have already ripped that study to shreds but there are other illnesses out here besides heart disease. As a matter of fact, if you are currently under the age of 60 you stand an equal chance of dying from cancer or infection or both, as the rates of heart disease continue to decline slowly over the next couple of decades.

2) It seems to have anti-cancer properties once the cancer is actually present, meaning people who are on Omega 3’s do better outcomes wise.

3) It augments the chemotherapy routines and decreases the side effects.

4) It augments the radiation routines and decreases the side effects.

5) It’s early in the game but fish oil Omega 3’s also seem to decrease recurrences and metastasis.

6) Fish oil has been shown in numerous studies to decrease the overall mortality rates from all causes as much as 25% (more in some studies).

You don’t have to be an optimist or a rocket scientist to see how terribly important fish oil is. But don’t short change yourself. The dirty little secret the government does not want you to know about flu shots. The strength from within is in your immune system.

Every year we go through campaigns of fear based/disaster based near harassment from the media and the government concerning the flu and flu shots.

But here is the dirty little secret they don’t want you to know.

Your response to the flu shot is only as good as your immune system!  A weak immune system and you’ll have a weak response and the shot will be of marginal value.

Now, for lots of reasons, including the fact that I value my freedom, I am not going to tell you not to get the flu shot.  I will tell you to discuss the pros and cons with your doctor and ask them if they are taking the shot.  If you would have asked me last year, the supposedly most dangerous year not to get the shot, I would have said no, even though I have written about how the number one killer is changing in the near future.

Same answer I would have given you the year “bird” flu was suppose to devastate humanity and didn’t.

The fact remains that every epidemic, real or imagined has survivors and lots of them.  Those are people who have strong immune systems.  This is why Europe, while devastated by black plague, was not wiped out.

My very first HIV patient is still alive (diagnosed in 1990) more because of the strength of her immune system than any drugs we gave her, especially in the early years!

Now which side of the “immune fence” do you want to be on?

Strong or weak?

My advice is picking the strong side no matter whether you’re getting the shot or not.
